How to Be Wary of Misinformation and Disinformation During Elections Online

With every subsequent election, we hear about how misleading, or false information, is being used maliciously by external and internal players to get an advantage over certain candidates or political parties. With the ever-present nature of social media and the speed with which people re-share information, misinformation, and disinformation, are now more prevalent, and worrying, more than ever. We have damaging deep fakes and statements made that are blatantly false that people still share or so realistic that people share because they seem true. This makes it necessary to be hyper-vigilant when reading and passing on information so as not to extend falsehoods. In this workshop, we will look at both misinformation and disinformation and how to be wary while gathering information during elections.
