Citation Justice: Information From Diverse Perspectives Online
Citation metrics are prestigious but also prejudiced. Research on citation metrics highlights the ongoing Matilda and Matthew effects in research. The academic community needs to know, acknowledge, cite, and use the research of IBPOC scholars, not only to amplify their work, but to reduce the harms and trauma in education, cultural, social, professional, and clinical practices. This presentation seeks to center and celebrate the works of IBPOC scholars; and create pathways for normalizing such justice practices within scholarship. Attendees will learn about the extent of the injustices for scholars’ citations in academia; as well as possible solutions to these issues. We have already seen great systematic changes to citation practices, since Lorisia MacLeod (2021) introduced a template for citing Elder’s Knowledge that has been adopted by the American Psychological Association.
